This document will introduce you to the delights of our software collection. We’ll start off with a quick summary of each feature of the CD, then go into more detail with hints that’ll increase your enjoyment of the package. You may find it helpful to print out this document and keep it handy.
The items on this CD-ROM fall into four main categories:
•The Macintosh Bible Electronic Edition
The complete text of The Macintosh Bible, 6th Edition, in Adobe Acrobat format,
with bookmarks and hypertext links added.
•A Library of Clip Art and Stock Photos
A collection of royalty-free art in several formats for you to use,
together with a Catalog that lets you browse through thumbnail-sized
repesentations of the files without having to open each one.
•Sound files from Earshot SFX
Dazzling CD-quality sound files
•Software Demos
Limited-use versions of software from all the major Macintosh developers,
organized into folders that parallel the structure of The Macintosh Bible.
First off, you need to make sure that you have a few things installed. If you aren’t sure whether you have Apple’s QuickTime and Sound Manager extensions installed, go to the Install This! folder in the main window of the CD. Next, in order to read the Macintosh Bible Electroinc Edition, you must install the Acrobat Reader onto your hard disk. The Installer program is in the Adobe Acrobat™ Reader folder, also in the main window of this CD. It will require 4 megabytes of your precious hard disk—and it’s well worth it.
Now you’re free to explore. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can wander about on your own, poking into folders and opening files to your heart’s delight. But if you’d like a guide, you can rev up the Mac Bible Launcher, which provides an easy way to sample the goodies on the disk. (The Mac Bible Launcher requires a monitor that can handle at least 640 x 480 resolution. If you have the monitor set to more than 256 colors, it will ask for permission to reset it to 256). The heart of the Launcher is a screen with four big navigation buttons, arranged around a central text area:
As you roll your mouse pointer over each of the buttons, it highlights and the text in the middle changes accordingly, telling you how to use the item. Click on the button, and you enter that component of the CD-ROM . When you quit the component you have entered, you will be brought back to this screen. To leave the Launcher, click on the Quit button in the upper-left-hand corner of the screen.
Here’s what the buttons do:
•Clip Art Library: opens the Mac Bible Image Catalog, which shows you thumbnails of the graphics files in the Library (the 3D models in the Acuris folder did not generate proper thumbnails, but they will show full-size previews correctly. Note: you must have QuickDraw 3D installed to view these). Complete instructions for using the Catalog are in the Cumulus Browser (US) folder within the Clip Art/Stock Photos folder. The important things to know are: Double-click on an image to see a full-sized preview; single-click on an image to select it, then press command-I to get information about a file. Press command-R, and the folder containing the image will open, so you can copy it elsewhere or open it in your favorite graphics program. Some of the images are in generic formats, not specific to any particular program, so if you double-click on the image file itself, you might get the message “Application not found.” This is especially common with EPS files—you can open these directly with Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand (demos of both of these programs are on the CD), or with several shareware utilities on the BMUG PD-ROM in the other half of this package (eps2PICT, epsConverter). Adobe Photoshop will open most other formats (again, there is a demo on this disk) and don’t forget that you can use lowly SimpleText to open PICT files. Note: please read the documentation in each vendor’s folder for licensing information before using any of the images in a commercial context.
•Clip Audio Library: opens a Macromedia Director movie which lets you sample the sounds provided by DXM Productions, from the Earshot Library. The actual sound files themselves (in AIFF format) are in the Sampler folder within the Earshot DFX folder. To play individual files (there are many more sounds in the folders than you hear in the movie), you may use the program SoundAppFat in the same folder. Instructions are under the Help or Guide menu (looks like a fat question mark).
•The Macintosh Bible Electronic Edition: The first time you click this button, you will be asked where you installed the Acrobat Reader program. Navigate through the folders to your copy of the Acrobat Reader, highlight it, and click Open. (The Launcher will remember where the Reader is, and not ask you again. ) Then the first chapter of the book will open. General instructions for using the Acrobat Reader are available under the Help or Guide menu, at the upper right of your screen. For specific instructions concerning this particular document, click on the last bookmark (in the column down the left-hand side of your screen) titled “How to use the Electronic Edition” and you’ll jump to a tutorial page.
•Demos and Free Software: This is the gateway to the largest component of the CD-ROM. When you click on this button, a popup menu will appear, with these choices:
These are the folders into which the Demos are collected on the CD, and correspond to sections of The Macintosh Bible. Here’s how the folders match up with the chapters of the book:

So, for example, if you are reading Chapter 17 in the Bible and are curious about Multimedia programs, you can start up the Launcher, click on the Demos button, and scroll down the menu to the Multimedia item. Another menu will pop out to the side, listing the specific applications available to you, like so:
Roll your mouse pointer over the program you want to investigate, and you’re in business. (If you decide that you don’t want anything from this menu, press command-period and you’ll be sent back to the main screen.)
Here’s where the tricky part starts. Many of the programs on the CD need to be installed or copied to your hard drive. Some of them, especially the graphics programs, take up a heckuvalotta real estate. But there are a number of reasons why we couldn’t fix them so they would run straight from the CD. For one thing, many of these programs won’t run from a locked disk, which a CD-ROM is by definition. For another, many programs require special files to be added to your System Folder, and their Installer programs take care of that detail. Scroll to the end of this document for a table listing all the programs that want to be copied or installed to your hard disk and the amount of space they take up. Naturally, you probably won’t want to install them all at once! For one thing, only install the version appropriate for your machine, whether a 680X0 Mac or a Power Mac. There’s another way to cut down on the megabytage you have to sacrifice to one of these programs: oftentimes, the Installer program will have a “Custom” install option, which lets you install a minimal amount of software to your hard drive, rather than the complete package.
Note: When the Launcher copies a program to your hard disk (that is, when you don’t go through an Installer program), it puts them into a new folder called “Mac Bible Demos.”
Many installer programs require that you Restart your Macintosh after the installation is complete. They always warn you of this beforehand, so you have the option of saving work in other programs that may be running in the background. The first time you run the Launcher after the Restart and select the program you just installed, you will be asked to show the Launcher where you installed it. Use the dialog box to find the copy you installed to your hard disk, and from then on the Launcher will remember where you put it, even if you don’t!
If after a period of use, the Launcher starts to give you trouble, forgetting where you installed programs or starting the wrong program, its Preferences file has probably become corrupted. Find this file (in the Preferences folder in your System Folder) and throw it away. It will create a new version, which you’ll have to rebuild by showing it where your installed programs are.
Remember, it’s not necessary to use the Launcher to access the programs we’ve provided. You can certainly go through the folders on your own and install and copy at your own pace. Even if you do use the Launcher, it’s wise to go through the folders on the CD-ROM anyway, because that’s where the detailed documentation resides.
Troubleshooting hints:
If you have difficulty running this CD-ROM, the first thing to try is turning off non-essential extensions and control panels. You can accomplish this with the Extensions Manager control panel, part of System 7, or with another extension-managing utility (demo versions of Now Startup Manager and Conflict Catcher are included on this disk). Use one of these to turn off non-Apple extensions.
In the vast majority of cases, if something on the CD-ROM doesn’t work right, the source of the problem lies not with the CD but with your Mac (sorry). Make sure that you’re not trying to run a program that your machine can’t handle, either memory- or speed-wise. Check for documentation in the program’s folder on the CD or in the folder where it was installed on your Mac. If you’re having trouble figuring out how to work a program, please don’t call us! We’re a small company, and can’t provide tech support for this wide variety of software. Please contact the vendors directly or through their support forums on America Online, CompuServe, or the Internet. Contact information for most of them can be found in their Read Me files or in Appendix D in the Macintosh Bible (remember, you’ve got a copy of it sitting right there on the CD!) If there is a physical defect on the disk itself, return it to us for a replacement at the address given below.
Here are some notes on the individual programs:
Phyla: Ignore the message to watch the “Video Terminal” movie. That refers to a component of the Phyla distribution disk.
PopupFolder: Remember to Restart your Mac after installing this.
Fontographer: This presents you with a blank screen upon opening, awaiting your command to create a new font or edit a pre-existing one.
Infini-D: This will install QuickDraw 3D into your system, which you can also use with the Studio Pro Blitz demo. The program itself will be installed into a folder called Specular Infini-D, in case you’re having trouble finding it.
Extensis PageTools: If you are installing into the Tryout version of Adobe PageMaker that comes on this disk, you’ll have to do a little manual installation after the Installer itself is done. The Installer will create a “Plugins” folder in the “PageMaker” folder. But the PageTools plugins need to be moved into the real “Plugins” folder, which is in the “RSRCTV” folder. Remember, you won’t be able to run any of the Extensis products from the Launcher, because they’re installed into another application.
Deck II: Requires that RAM Doubler and Virtual Memory be turned off. Turn off Virtual Memory by opening the “Memory” Control Panel and clicking the appropriate button, then Restarting. Disable RAM Doubler by Restarting with the tilde key held down, or by using an extensions manager, such as Conflict Catcher, Now Startup Manager, or Apple’s Extensions Manager.
Dust: This won’t work with either RAM Doubler or Virtual Memory turned on. See the instructions under “Deck II.”
3D Web Workshop: This isn’t actually a demo, but an Acrobat document concerning a new product. The Launcher should launch the Acrobat Reader when you select this item.
CyberFinder: Installs a folder with documentation to your hard disk.
DragNet: This opens to a blank screen—you’ll need to open a document (a “Sample Bookmarks” file is provided) plus open a window (make a choice from the “Windows” menu).
Marionet: After you run this Installer, find the “Marionet” folder on your hard drive for information on using this program. It’s an invisible program that runs in the background, so we couldn’t start it from the Launcher.
Web Quick: This installs an extension, which adds a “W”-shaped item to your menu bar. There’s no other program file or control panel. It also installs a “Read Me” file on your Desktop. (If you pull down the Web Quick menu there’s quite a lot of information right there.
